On Wednesday, the Lebanese Ministry of Defense threatened those responsible for the negligence that led to the Beirut port explosion, which resulted in 100 deaths and more than 4,000 wounded.
This came in the first comment by Defense Minister Zeina Akar, via her Twitter account, in response to the capital’s port explosion.
Akar said: “Six years have passed since this massive negligence. Yes, those responsible will be punished.” Without more details.
She added: “Missing people, martyrs, wounded, fires, destruction, and hateful words. Let us look at how the French behaved following the Notre-Dame fire and at the countries that offer assistance because humanitarian concerns rise above politics and hatred.”
The Minister of Defense expressed her country’s crisis, saying: “In times like these, nations discover themselves and people’s natures are revealed.”
On Tuesday, the Lebanese capital spent a bloody night as a result of a huge explosion in the port of Beirut. Initial estimates indicated that it was due to the explosion of one of the port’s warehouses that contained “highly explosive materials.”
The Lebanese Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, announced a national day of mourning for the victims of the explosion, while the Lebanese Supreme Defense Council considered Beirut a “disaster city,” as part of a package of decisions and recommendations to confront the repercussions of the accident.
Tuesday’s explosion increases the pain of a country that has been suffering for months from the repercussions of a severe economic crisis and severe political polarization, in a scene in which regional and international parties interact.
